Thus, we are familiar with classicism, romanticism or cubism on the one hand, and communism, nationalism or liberalism on the other, to name but a few. The great originality of the\u00a0<em>noucentism<\/em>e\u00a0is that it joins together the two in a single name. Culture and politics going hand in hand, this is already one of the strong points of this movement that raged in Catalonia at the beginning of the 20th century.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/buste-de-femme-et-pin-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4046 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/buste-de-femme-et-pin-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/buste-de-femme-et-pin-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/buste-de-femme-et-pin-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/buste-de-femme-et-pin-1080x1440.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/buste-de-femme-et-pin.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>Noucentism<\/em>e\u00a0was born from a combination of &#8220;nou cents&#8221; (nine hundred) and the adjective &#8220;nou&#8221; which means new, modern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As there was the quattrocento in Italy, the novecento became\u00a0<em>noucentism<\/em>e\u00a0referring to both the century and the new ideas it was to convey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In fact, it was a political-cultural movement that began around 1906 and aimed to define the cultural substratum on which political Catalanism was to be based.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">You have to be Catalan to understand the subtleties of this movement and all that it conveyed at the time. The search for Greek and Latin roots and the influence of the Italian Renaissance led them to invent a different style, one that was not based on Romanticism or Classicism.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">The gardens of Sainte Clotilde are an exemplary synthesis of this.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/allee-de-glycine-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4052 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/allee-de-glycine-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/allee-de-glycine-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/allee-de-glycine-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/allee-de-glycine-1080x1440.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/allee-de-glycine.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">They were designed by Rubio i Tuduri,\u00a0a\u00a0garden architect, son of an architect.\u00a0He was\u00a0strongly influenced by the ideas of the French landscape designer Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier.\u00a0The two of them)\u00a0designed the gardens of Montjuic Hill in Barcelona.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In this noucentist spirit, where culture is an important base for the representation of the Catalan soul, Rubio i Tuduri inscribes the garden as a work of art in its own right.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&#8220;The art of gardens is as worthy as that of music, poetry, architecture and, of course, painting and sculpture. It is a question of being in complicity with a soft and soothing nature such as it appears in the paintings of the Italian Renaissance. He must contribute to it without ever wanting to subject it to the artist&#8217;s pre-established inspirations.&#8221; <\/p>\n<cite><em>Rubio i Tuduri\u00a0<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Rubi\u00f3 is literally in love with the Mediterranean. His gardens reflect the eclecticism typical of the multiple cultures that have developed around this sea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">His Mediterranean landscape, so well illustrated in Ste Clotilde, is reduced to a human scale, domesticated and very Greco-Latin. Some light touches of exuberant and luminous vegetation alternate with a studied and sober cameo of green tones. The tree species are few, often reduced to cypress, pine and palm. The spaces are drawn with great care, following the slope of the land so that the eye always converges on the Mediterranean, sentinel in the background.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Statue-face-a-la-mer.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4064\" width=\"701\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Statue-face-a-la-mer.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Statue-face-a-la-mer-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/histambar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Statue-face-a-la-mer-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As reinterpreted in the gardens of <a href=\"https:\/\/histambar.com\/en\/blog\/the-gardens-of-etretat-where-man-models-nature-france\/\">\u00c9tretat<\/a> in France, the landscape gardener Rubi\u00f3 has sculpted nature with a limited number of plants, making the most of all the natural curves of the land. Thus, we are familiar with classicism, romanticism or cubism on the one hand, and communism, nationalism or liberalism on the other, to name but a few. The great originality of the\u00a0noucentisme\u00a0is that it joins together the two in a single name. Culture and politics going hand in hand, this is already one of the strong points of this movement that raged in Catalonia at the beginning of the 20th century.\u00a0 Noucentisme\u00a0was born from a combination of &#8220;nou cents&#8221; (nine hundred) and the adjective &#8220;nou&#8221; which means new, modern. As there was the quattrocento in Italy, the novecento became\u00a0noucentisme\u00a0referring to both the century and the new ideas it was to convey. In fact, it was a political-cultural movement that began around 1906 and aimed to define the cultural substratum on which political Catalanism was to be based.\u00a0 You have to be Catalan to understand the subtleties of this movement and all that it conveyed at the time.
